North American Birds Hate Wind Turbines
At the base of many Wind Turbines lie the bodies of many birds. The world's first wind farm was 0.6 MW, consisting of 20 wind turbines rated at 30 kilowatts each, installed on the shoulder of Crotched Mountain in southern New Hampshire in December 1980.
As more and more wind farms develop it has become common knowledge that birds are opposed to each new wind turbine. As of January 2021, the U.S. Wind Turbine Database (USWTDB) contains more than 67,000 turbines.
An estimated 300,000 birds attacked wind turbines in 2020, during a pandemic no less. This years numbers are expected to be higher due to the laxation in COVID-19 rules and regulations which will allow birds to gather in larger groups and move about more freely.
Siemens is one of the leading manufacturers of wind turbines. When we reached out to Siemens for comment, they agreed to a brief phone interview as long as the employee’s identity was kept a secret. “Mr. Dick” is a 12 year employee with Siemens. Mr. Dick feels that all employees of all wind turbine manufacturers are in jeopardy. “If 300,000 birds can attack our product, who is to say they won’t attack the people making the product.” Mr. Dick went on to say that guarding the turbines would not be cost effective and at this time they are requesting employees to attach the “praying” or “heart” emoji within any interoffice correspondence. “It’s the most we can do at this time.”
As of this writing it is unclear of why the birds are so upset with wind turbines. We can only hope that all birds concede defeat sooner than later (insert praying or heart emoji here)…
